The Family Graveyard

It's a just a little while longer until Halloween arrives, but why not get in the mood, with today's images. The family on my mothers side has a small graveyard near the town of Jablanica, which we recently visited.

Of course, there are new gravestones here, but photography wise I was more interested in the older gravestones, some of which date back to 1882 and even older!

Let's take a stroll through the moody sights.

Do you like photos of graveyards?
Do they creep you out or are you interested in seeing them?

  4. I like graveyards and cementeries. I remember playing baseball in an old, abandoned graveyard in Venezuela when I was a child. Tombs were the bases, etc. Never thought of it as creepy...

  6. Mersad, I love these images.
I can't help but remember the mass graves I saw. It used to be a vision of Hell.

    1. It's an image that will haunt these regions for a long time (and maybe that's for the better, so people never forget). On the other hand, life, weather we want it or not, does go on, and there is no satisfaction found in living in the past. Thanks for your visit Adrian.

  11. Mixed feelings for me. I used to find graveyards gloomy but it has changed in later years. Partly because where I live now is very close to an old one which has become part of my "daily life" as I often walk across it when going into town. Partly because of the deaths of my own parents. Partly because there is a theatre group in my town who in the summers do dramatized churchyard tours, bringing the "hidden" history behind some of the names on old gravestones alive.

  15. The pictures are very nice. O yes, I love those old graves, read the dates end the names of the deceased, and invent a history of their lives..... It's special that a family can have its own graveyard.
    Have a nice weekend!

  27. Yes I absolutely love photos of old graveyard stones. If there were to be find here in our neighbourhood I would definitely have taken photos there. Your capture is beautiful, serene. It's a beautiful sight too between the trees and flowers in the mountains.

  29. Graveyards do not creep me out at all. What I found most interesting here was how the grasses have grown up among the stones/graves. Here our cemeteries are well maintained so the grass is always mown etc...I think there is a lot of history in a graveyard.

  30. It is an interesting setting for a graveyard. The stones are tall and thin, much different from those in the States. And, our cemeteries are usually mowed and tended, but the wildness here adds a lot to the atmosphere.

  31. I love looking at graveyard photos in other countries, as they look very different from what we have here. Besides, we don't have family graveyards, they are always in big locations owned by everybody, public or private.
